Maryann
Gaffney
Jan 22, 1941 — Mar 24, 2026
MaryAnn Gaffney, 85, beloved wife and mother, passed away peacefully at home on 21-Mar-2026 with her family at her side.
Born on 22-Jan-1941 in Carteret, NJ, MaryAnn Lydia Brockup was the youngest of five children raised by the late Frederick Brockup, Sr. and Mary Bellock Sangyi Brockup. She grew up in Carteret along with her brothers Alfred, Frederick Jr. (Freddy), and Arthur (Sonny), and her sister Eleanor. She would ultimately drop out of high school to work and help support her family.
On 12-Aug-1967, she married Charles P. (Mickey) Gaffney, Jr., after his honorable discharge from the Marines, and they settled in his hometown of Kittery, ME. In 1970, they celebrated the birth of their only child, Michael.
MaryAnn devoted her time to raising their son as Mickey found work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Once Michael entered his teens, she found supplemental work as a hospitality professional at several local hotels during the summer.
After retirement, both MaryAnn and Mickey enjoyed traveling. They made several trips with both friends and family to places such as Colonial Williamsburg, VA; Los Angeles, CA; Las Vegas, NV; and Ticonderoga, NY. MaryAnn and Mickey were together for 48 years until his passing on 14-Jul-2016. She called him the love of her life and never remarried.
MaryAnn continued to reside in Kittery until earlier this year, when she moved to the greater Los Angeles area to live with her son, daughter-in-law, and grand pets, whom she adored. She passed after a brief illness.
MaryAnn was fiercely devoted to her family and loved animals. She had a silly sense of humor, but also a spine of steel. She could be very sweet and kind, but when crossed, the Jersey Girl in her would come out in force. She always enjoyed eating out for dinner with family and friends and particularly enjoyed a good fish fry.
She loved and was loved in return and will be deeply missed. MaryAnn was predeceased by her husband, Mickey, and her brothers, Alfred, Freddy, and Sonny Brockup. Sister Eleanor Kirschner, brother-in-law Thomas Gaffney, and cats Ralphie and Morris.
She is survived by her son Michael Gaffney and his wife Heather, brother-in-law Dennis Gaffney and his longtime partner Joan Pelkey, and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, the 3rd of June at 1:00 pm at Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot, ME.
