Odams
Jun 17, 1940 — Oct 3, 2019
Neil Odams of Kittery lost his long battle with cancer peacefully at home on October 3, 2019. Neil
was born on June 17, 1940, the son of Charles and Helen Odams (deceased) in Medford, MA. He
graduated from Woburn High School in 1959 and from Springfield College in 1963 with a BA in Physical
Education and Biology. Neil went on to obtain his Masters in Secondary Education Administration from
Salem State College.
Neil will be remembered fondly by his large extended family and friends as a friendly man who had a
great love for life. His recreation and career reflected this. Neil began working hard early, as a short
order cook, snow plow driver, paving and landscaping.
He taught at Woburn High School from 1963-1968, Bedford MA High school from 1968-1976 and
Bourne High School from 1982-1985. Neil was active in sports as assistant football coach and head
baseball coach at Bedford High School, wrestling coach at Winchester High School, assistant football
coach at Bourne High School and assistant football coach and associate baseball coach at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. In addition, he served as a general manager in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League.
His varied life included driving for Greyhound Bus Lines between New York City and Canada, several
years with Sonoco Products as he introduced plastic shopping bags to New England, and as a conductor
for the famous Boston Duck Tours for 9 years. He had all kinds of driving licenses and boat captain
permits. Neil always had multiple occupations going on and multiple businesses. He owned Northern
Coal of Maine from 1977-1981. He and his wife Patty operated Captain & Patty's Clambakes for 35
years, Captain & Patty's historical boat tours for 21 years and a restaurant in Kittery Point.
Neil never slowed down. In the middle of all of this activity, he joined the Screen Actors Guild, did radio
and TV commercials and videos for numerous clients, including Massachusetts Tourism and found time
to star in national television commercials for two years for DishTV. He would be picked up by a limo,
flown first class to Hollywood, shoot a national commercial for 2-3 days, fly home and resume delivering
heating oil for Dead River. Neil was an "extra" in several films, watching stars like Clint Eastwood direct
a film.
He even found time to relax, enjoying dining out with friends locally and his annual "Cousins Day" at his
home in Kittery Point. He enjoyed boating and fishing off the New England coast. He and his family
enjoyed his camp in Denmark, Maine for several years. Neil maintained lifelong friendships with his old
school pals from high school and college and those he met along the way in his many sports and
occupational endeavors. And he LOVED oysters, holding the consumption records at Roberts Maine Grill
