Obituary

Orion Orme Simms III of Dover, New Hampshire, passed away suddenly at his home of natural causes on January 11, 2021.

Orion was born on May 13, 1941, in Alva, Oklahoma, to Orion Simms, Jr. and Olene Pressnall Simms. Orion spent most of his childhood in Roseburg, Oregon, where his family moved after fourth grade. For the rest of his life, he loved to visit Oregon as often as he could.

He attended University of Oregon, State University of New York, and the University of Southern California and received both Bachelors and Masters degrees.

In 1964, he joined the US Air Force, was commissioned, and earned his flight wings. He served in the Air Force for 22 years, mostly with B-52s and FB-111s, including two tours in Vietnam.

After his Air Force career, Orion pursued another passion in technology at Liberty Mutual where he had positions of steadily increasing responsibility and retired a second time as a Senior Technical Analyst after 17 years.

Finally, Orion worked for 8 years for the State of New Hampshire as a Motorcycle Safety Instructor.

Orion had a passion for the outdoors, particularly hiking. He summited all forty-eight 4,000 footers in New Hampshire as well as hiking many of the larger peaks in New England, Montana, Oregon, and Alaska. He traveled extensively including all 50 states (mostly by car, camper, and motorcycle), Canada, Asia, and Europe.

He was an avid biker, both pedal and motorcycle, and loved going for long scenic rides and sharing his love of motorcycles with others by being a motorcycle safety instructor including teaching two of his sons in the course.

Orion was also a lover of technology and was always an early adopter of the newest technology, whether it was one of the first calculators, building one of the earliest home computers, or an Apple Watch.

Orion was a long-term member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities including Branch President and Bishop of the Portsmouth New Hampshire Ward.

He is survived by his sister and three brothers, Vicky Boyce and her husband Bill, Vernon and his spouse Larry Huffman, Ronald Herriott and his wife Kendall, Donald Herriott and his wife Karen, as well numerous nieces, nephews, and their children.

Orion is also survived by his four children Kindra Bradley and her daughter Carmen, Carmen's  husband Zachery, and their daughters Caroline and Victoria; Matthew Simms and his wife Kathleen and their son Tyler; Jared Simms and his wife Jennifer and their sons Grant, Tanner, Cooper, and Dallin; and Benjamin Simms.

Orion was preceded in death by his father Orion Orme Simms, Jr., his step-father Willard (Bill) Herriott, mother Olene Pressnall Simms Herriott, and sister Dee Anne Simms Brown.

Orion will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, May 14th, 2021, and will be buried with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be made in the form of a charitable donation in Orion's name to the Appalachian Mountain Club, 10 City Square, Suite 2, Boston, MA 02129 or https://www.outdoors.org/donate/tribute-gifts/ . Care of the Simms family has been entrusted to the J S Pelkey and Son Funeral Home.
