Kittery, ME – Otto Ackermann, 96, passed away peacefully on Sunday January 23, 2022 at Durgin Pines in Kittery, surrounded by his children. His battle with congestive heart failure and dementia ending, he entered the presence of his Savior Jesus Christ. Otto was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church.
Otto lived at Durgin Pines for the past 2 years. Before that he lived in Queens New York, since coming to the United States from Germany in 1952 together with his beloved wife Gisela.
Once in the US, Otto attended night school and graduated from City College of the City University of New York with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He worked as a food technologist until retiring in 1990.
After retirement, Otto joined as a Volunteer in the International Executive Service Corps which enabled him to travel with his wife and work in other parts of the world including Egypt and Romania. Otto was fluent in many languages including German, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, and Romanian. He loved reading, learning, and experiencing new places. He also enjoyed fishing with his older brother Ernst out on Long Island where he and his family enjoyed many summers in Rocky Point on the Long Island Sound.
Otto is survived by his daughter Rita Banakos and son-in-law George Banakos of Kittery Maine, his son William Ackermann and life partner Joan Nickel of Prescot Arizona, his older brother Ernst Ackermann of Binghamton New York; grandchildren William Banakos of Newton Alabama, Daniel and Bethany Banakos of Dayton Ohio, and Jenny and Henry Thompson of Ashland City Tennessee. Five great-grandchildren- Jordan, Nicholaos, and Seth Banakos of York Maine, and Otto and Leo Banakos of Dayton Ohio; And many nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews in the US and in Germany.
Otto was predeceased by his beloved wife Gisela (Neumann) Ackermann of 50 years; his parents Heinrich and Katherine (Frambach) Ackermann; and 5 of his brothers.
Otto was known as "Opi" to his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. He was a much beloved and generous Dad, grandpa, and great grandpa, and a favorite uncle. Otto had an endearing smile, a quiet reserve, and a fun loving spirit. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
His family is very grateful to the staff at Durgin Pines for the wonderful loving care he received there during these past 2 years.
