Obituary

Patricia Day Aichele of Portsmouth, NH, passed away peacefully in her home on April 3, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was 95 years old. Patricia was predeceased by her husband, Carl F. Aichele III, in 1991.

Born on February 3, 1930, in Oak Park, IL, Patricia lived a life defined by her passion for education, physical fitness, and nurturing the potential of young minds.

Patricia earned a BA in English from St. Joseph's College in Maryland. After dedicating herself to raising her five children, Patricia's thirst for knowledge led her to return to academia later in life. She earned two master's degrees: one in Physical Education from Plymouth State College and another in Special Education from the University of New Hampshire—achievements that exemplified her belief in the pursuit of education at any age.

With a lifelong love for water, Patricia found her element working as a lifeguard, swimming instructor, and synchronized swimming coach at locations along the eastern seaboard—including the Wentworth Hotel in New Castle and Portsmouth YMCA. She taught English and Physical Education at Odyssey House in Hampton, Kensington Elementary School, the Strafford Learning Center at Somersworth High School, and the New School in Kennebunk, ME. She also served as the Director of Special Education at Newington Elementary School in the Portsmouth School District, where her innovative approaches to education made a lasting difference in the lives of countless students.

One of her proudest achievements was founding "Reach for the Stars," a science-based camp for girls ages 10-12, which inspired young women to pursue interests in science and discovery.

Patricia's love for the outdoors was evident in her enthusiasm for backpacking, hiking, skiing, cycling, rock climbing, and wilderness education. She believed in the healing power of nature and delighted in sharing that passion with others.

In a 2004 Portsmouth Magazine article on keeping fit after age 70, Patricia was quoted saying, "The kids keep me young. Just being around them helps me stay in the loop, and I just thrive off the energy they have."

Patricia leaves behind a rich legacy through her five children and five grandchildren, who were the joy of her life. Her family remembers her as a woman of boundless energy, unwavering dedication, and profound wisdom—qualities that touched not only her immediate family but also the countless students, athletes, and young people whose lives she influenced throughout her remarkable career.

Patricia Day Aichele's life exemplified the belief that education extends far beyond the classroom, that physical well-being is integral to a fulfilling life, and that every child deserves the opportunity to reach for the stars. Her contributions to education, athletics, and youth development will continue to resonate through the many lives she touched.

Patricia leaves behind her five children: Genevieve Aichele of Portsmouth, NH; Carl Aichele of South Berwick, ME; Marie Aichele of Milton, NH; Kate Miner of Tacoma, WA; and Robert Aichele (with Serap Gunduz) of Oakland, CA. She also leaves behind five grandchildren: Skylar Miner (with Alyssa Hammond) of Tacoma, WA; Aylin Aichele and Emel Aichele, both of Salt Lake City, UT; Oliver Aichele of South Berwick, ME; and Brynn Aichele of Wilton, NH; along with nephews John C. Day and Family of San Jose, CA; Vincent Saguto and Family of Kensington, MD; Jay Winkler and Family of Moorestown, NJ; Julie Vargo and Family of Virginia Beach, VA; and John Saguto of Sonoma, CA.
