Phyllis Elaine Nash, of York Harbor and Kittery Point, ME, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January, 31, 2015, at York Hospital, with her son and the exceptional ICU nursing staff at her side. Phyllis was born Phyllis Elaine Van De Carr on April 9, 1928, the daughter of Cuyler A. and Evelyn (Mac Farland) Van De Carr. She was raised in Lebanon, NH, graduating from Lebanon High School in 1946. After high school, Phyllis attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, graduating with a Bachelors of Music degree in Music Education in 1950. Following graduation, she moved to Kittery Point, ME to begin work as the Elementary Music Supervisor in the Kittery, ME public schools. While living in Kittery Point, she boarded with Mrs. Bray in her house on Pepperell Cove. Phyllis taught in Kittery until leaving to get married in 1954. On June 20, 1954, Phyllis married Malcolm D. Nash, of Pittsfield, MA, at the First Congregational Church in Lebanon, NH. Following their marriage, they relocated, for Malcolm's work with Nabisco, to Westchester County, NY, where they would make their primary residence, mostly in the village of Ossining, until their retirements. In 1968, Phyllis returned to teaching in the Ossining Public Schools. After one year as a substitute teacher, she was offered a full-time position as an elementary music teacher. In 1971, Phyllis was named one of the 'Leaders of American Elementary and Secondary Education' for her work developing the music program at Washington School in Ossining. While teaching in Ossining, Phyllis completed the coursework required for New York State permanent teaching certification, in both music and elementary education, at the Bank Street College of Education in New York City. Phyllis retired from the Ossining Public Schools in 1991. While living in Ossining, Phyllis was active in community youth activities. She served as a Girl Scout troop leader, a Cub Scout den mother, and as a chaperone at high school activities. Phyllis also enjoyed going in to New York to attend Broadway musicals. In 1994, following both of their retirements, Phyllis and Malcolm moved to the home they owned in Kittery Point, ME. They spent many happy years there, especially enjoying their view of Chauncey Creek and Portsmouth Harbor. In retirement, Phyllis continued her passion for keeping her home seasonally decorated. She also was an avid reader, especially of the works of Betty Neels. Following Malcolm's death in 2012, Phyllis moved to an apartment at Sentry Hill in York Harbor, ME. She enjoyed the time she spent there, making many new friends, and keeping her apartment seasonally decorated and throwing open its doors so others could enjoy it. Phyllis was predeceased by her husband Malcolm. She is survived by her son, Jonathan, of Kittery Point, ME and her daughter Kristine, of Pearl River, NY. She is also survived by her sister, Bette Cummings, of New London, NH, brother Neil Van De Carr, of Altamont, NY and many nieces and nephews. Phyllis also leaves behind long-time family friend, Terri Phillipps, of Kittery, ME.
