Phyllis A.
Welch
d. Jan 12, 2023
Kittery - Phyllis A. Welch, 72, passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2023, with her family by
her side, after bravely facing a period of declining health. She was married to her husband
Benjamin H. Welch for 44 years.
Born in Boston and raised in Belmont, Massachusetts, she graduated from Belmont Public
Schools and later received her degree from Marymount University. Phyllis went on to join the
Navy, serving as a journalist for 4 years. After marrying Ben in 1978, she spent the next 20
years as a Navy spouse. She moved 8 times and showed an incredible ability to turn any house
into a home; making any new locations seem a bit more familiar.
Her sense of duty would always propel her to help wherever she felt it was needed. Phyllis
served as the president of the Wives Club at several of the duty stations including Iwakuni,
Japan, Alameda, California and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In retirement she continued to serve
both on the board with the Fabulous Find in Kittery, Maine and volunteering with the First
Congregational Church of Kittery, Maine.
She had a passion for gardening, was an avid anglophile and loved to travel. She was happiest
surrounded by family and being able to spend time with her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband Ben, she is survived by her son Matthew S. Welch, his wife Maryann
L. Welch and their three children, Keith, Aiden and Quinn. She was the sister of Christine A.
Bennett, aunt to David K. Bennett and Laura C. Martin and cousin of Jean R. Husson.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on February 20, 2023 at the First Congregational
Church of Kittery Point, 23 Pepperrell Rd, Kittery Point, ME. To leave online condolences
