Obituary

Richard Calvin Hall passed away on October 26, 2024, at York Hospital after a mighty battle with failing health.

Son of Clifford and Marilyn (Byard) Hall, he spent his early years on the Seacoast. He then moved to the Space Coast of Florida with his family, to graduate from Satellite High in 1963. Not particularly interested in becoming an astronaut, he became an avid surfer instead. In 1963 he entered the Navy and served for 4 years on the USS Radford out of Pearl Harbor in Honolulu; and spent time surfing. Returning to Portsmouth after the Navy, he worked for a while at General Dynamics Shipyard in Quincy, MA. He married Nancy in 1972, and they soon moved to Greenland, where they lived in a tiny apartment while working their way through school. He earned his Associates degree in automotive, then went back a few years later to study electronics. In 1979 they bought an old farm and moved to York, ME. After outliving the electronics firms in the area, he changed careers again and went to work at York Hospital in the ICU as an EKG tech, until retiring in 2018.

Rick loved cars and racing, especially off-road rally racing. For many years he (they) volunteered as stage managers at the New England Forest Rally. Following the rally, they would usually go white water rafting on one of Maine's rowdy rivers. Always up for an adventure, he took up skiing at age 55. Thanks to his surfing experience, he mastered the bunny slope in his first lesson. He and his wife skied throughout New England and Colorado for the next 10 years. He loved to travel, and visited the Caribbean, Costa Rica, Mexico, Ireland and as much of the US as he could reach. Even tethered to Oxygen and in a wheelchair, he visited Rangely, ME, for the Eclipse, as well as Acadia National Park and the Botanical Gardens this summer. Just a week before his passing, he visited a private car museum near Augusta on a lovely peak foliage day.

He collected and made puzzle boxes. The plan is that he shall be interred in one of them into the family plot (Byard) in Sedgewick, ME, in the spring. A local service for friends is still in the planning stages.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy, and his 6 siblings and their spouses: Phil and Joyce Hall (North Berwick, ME), Suzy and Barry Moore (Merritt Island FL), Debbie and Andy Burton (Cocoa, FL), Pete and Marla Reuter (Vero, FL),  George and Melissa Reuter (Buckfield, ME) and Carolyn and Jeff Woods (Atlantic Beach, FL), plus many nephews, nieces and grands.

Friends can sign on to leave online condolences at www.jspelkeyfuneralhome.com . In lieu of flowers, please consider a small donation to one of the Veterans Service organizations: Wounded Warrior Family Support, or Homes for our Troops, or the service organization of your choice. Rick loved his family and friends, and deeply missed being with them during Covid and during his illness. Please raise a toast and a smile to him.  Care for the Hall family has been entrusted to the JS Pelkey & Son Funeral Home.
