Somersworth –Richard J. (Dick) Obyc, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2023. Dick was born February 1, 1935, the youngest of five children, to Polish Immigrants, Albert and Eva Obyc, in Wheeling, WV.
Dick grew up in Wheeling, WV, a member of Saint Ladislaus Parish. He attended Saint Ladislaus Grade School, Central Catholic and McKinley Vocational High Schools.
Dick was a proud "Mountaineer" graduate of the University of West Virginia with a B.S. in Forestry.
His 35 year career with the US Forest Service began in February 1958. He served in multiple duty stations in both Pennsylvania and Virginia before being transferred to Durham, NH in 1985. He retired in 1992. Post "Retirement," Dick became the Coordinator for the NH Envirothon (High School Environmental Education Program) for another six years.
In his earlier years, Dick enjoyed hunting in Pennsylvania and fishing on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Many great memories were made with great people.
Dick's life of hard work and drive will live on as an example to not only his children and grandchildren, but to all who knew him.
Dick is pre-deceased by his wife, Mary Ann, of 57 years. They were both faithful parishioners of Saint Ignatius of Loyola Parish in Somersworth, NH and previously of Sacred Heart Parish in Manoa/Havertown, PA. Together, they sang in respective parish choirs for 50 years.
Dick is survived by: Son, R. Mark and spouse Trace Obyc of Somersworth, NH - Donna and spouse David Pettit of Saint Augustine, FL – Paula and spouse Robert Fowler of Havertown, PA – Kathy and spouse Shawn McCoole of Dover, NH – Monica and spouse Mark Peta of Chester Springs, PA. Also 13 Grandchildren and 4 Great-Grandchildren.
Services: A funeral mass will take place on Friday, May 19, 1pm, at Saint Ignatius of Loyola Parish Saint Martin Church, 120 Maple Street, Somersworth, NH.
