Robert J
Consaga Sr.
Jul 17, 1936 — Apr 28, 2023
Kittery, ME - Robert J. Consaga, Sr. (Bob) of Kittery Point, Maine, passed away on April 28, 2023 in his home after a period of declining health. Born a twin on July 17, 1936 to Cesare and Margaret (DeStefano) Consaga, he grew up in Ossining New York, graduating from Ossining High School in 1955. He met the love of his life, Carolyn Walsh, of Briarcliff Manor, NY on a blind date. They married October 26, 1957 and settled in Yorktown Heights, NY, raising their four children there.
Together, they established The Country Florist in 1965 and operated their business for 35 years. It was a place where everyone became family and deep friendships were made. They enjoyed traveling and searching for unique products to sell. The store was known for its abundance of exotic flowers and Bob's artistry.
One of his joys in life was decorating the church for the holidays. He became known for his custom wreaths at Christmas. He had a special frame made for the wreath he made each year for St. Patrick's Church in Yorktown. The wreath was so big and heavy that it took his friends at the fire department to help him hang it above the altar. Bob was a dedicated volunteer fireman and driver for the Yorktown Heights Engine Company #1, and a current member of the Yorktown Volunteer Firemen's Benevolent Association. The firehouse was right next to his store, so when the whistle blew, he dropped everything and ran. He was usually one of the first ones to jump on the firetruck and had it positioned out the door when the others arrived. Bob developed lifelong friendships with his fellow firemen. They would even deliver flowers for the store when he was in need at the holidays. Most nights the family would just be sitting down to dinner and the plectron would go off, and he was out the door, on his way to a fire.
On one of Bob and Carolyn's first vacations as newlyweds, they discovered York, Maine. They always felt most at home by the water. Several years later, they built a summer house in York, where the family continued to spend their summers. It was their place to unwind and was looked at as the family's reward for working so hard the rest of the year. They created many memories at the beach and made lifelong friends they looked forward to spending time with each year.
Bob was also known for his adventurous boating trips. He and the family loved cruising up the coast from the Hudson River in New York to Maine in July, returning the first week of August. Each trip had its own story of fun and adventures, including a rescue or two. Bob always loved being by the water. It refreshed him and gave him peace. When it came time to retire in 2000, Bob and Carolyn built their new home in Kittery Point. They considered the location one of divine intervention, because of the way they found it. They welcomed many friends and family and experienced the joy of retirement. They loved to entertain and there are many stories of wonderful times spent with friends and family in their new home.
Family and faith were values that clearly defined Bob. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and all of their accomplishments. But his faith was everything to him. It was at his core and unwavering. Bob was deeply involved in St. Raphael's Parish, where he enjoyed decorating the church, became a fourth degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, and a leader for Divine Mercy. He is remembered for his fundraising efforts. Everyone thought he was crazy when he suggested the Knights of Columbus raffle off a kayak to support a family in need of expensive home repairs for their disabled child. The campaign was a huge success! After newspaper articles appeared and a newscast was made, Bob helped raise over $50,000.00 for the family. Bob was always a humanitarian at heart and willing to help people who were struggling through a crisis.
Bob is survived by his twin brother Thomas (Patricia) Consaga of Wappinger Falls, NY. His daughter Sharon (Edward) Wlodarczyk of Southbury, CT. Their children, Kathryn (Mark) Zavislak, Carolyn Wlodarczyk,Esq. and Edward Wlodarczyk III; his son Robert J Consaga Jr. of Portsmouth, NH, his children Jennifer Consaga and Dr. Michael Consaga, Pharm D; his daughter Teresa (John) Gelinne of Maryland, their children, Capt John P.
