Robert Woods
Fisher
Jul 8, 1931 — Aug 2, 2024
Robert Woods Fisher (93) of 74 Frost Hill Road, Eliot, Maine, passed away at home on Friday, August 2, 2024. He was born on 8 July 1931 in Portsmouth, NH, to Harry Philip Fisher and Mary Ellen Woods. Educated in the Kittery schools, he graduated from Traip Academy in 1951. A Navy Veteran of the Korean War, he first enlisted in the US Naval Reserve in 1950 before being assigned in 1954 for duty aboard the USS Intrepid CVA-11. Returning to civilian life, he worked at Simplex Cable as a First-Class Industrial Helper (1956-1973). From 1973 to 1982, he was a business manager, financial secretary, and later President of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), AFL-CIO, Local #1973, out of Lewiston, Maine. He organized unions throughout the Northeast. He was then employed as an electrician by Griffin Construction Company and then by Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant until 1986, when, at its completion, he decided to use his many years of experience as an electrician and form his own company, PO-FOLK Electric & Sons. A Master Electrician, licensed in both Maine and New Hampshire, he was joined by his sons, Mike, Jim, and Chris, and their good friend Joey Webster, who was like a son to Bob. In 1997, he registered PO-FOLK Electric & Sons with the State of Maine Apprenticeship and Training Councill as an Approved Sponsor of a Registered Apprenticeship Training Program. Bob retired at the age of 91 in 2022.
The home he and his first wife, Marjorie, made in Eliot was open to all and was sometimes a refuge and second home for the children in the area. They enjoyed traveling and visited several countries, including several places he visited during his time in the Navy. Incredibly proud of his Irish heritage, in 2016, he and his wife Rosanne took a very moving trip back to the "Old Country," visiting the towns and sites associated with his Fisher, Woods, Leary, and Connolly ancestors, which included an extended trip to Scotland and England.
Bob will be remembered for the many ways he gave back to his community by donating his time and electrical expertise to families who didn't have the financial means to pay for his work, as well as to area churches, the town of Eliot, and various organizations, including the Eliot Historical Society, Raitt Farm Museum, John F. Hill Grange, and American Legion. He also served on Eliot's Budget Committee, Recycling Committee, Town Charter Commission, and District School Board. He never missed a town meeting and spoke up for others too shy to do it themselves. He petitioned for the present Town Charter, Fireworks, and Local Food Ordinances (2013-18). In 2013, he received the Eliot American Legion Post #188's Fabyan Drake Award for Good Citizenship in recognition of his service "above and beyond" to the town and its people.
Bob was predeceased by his high school sweetheart and wife of 58 years, Marjorie (Witham), in 2010, and his brothers Harry "Bud" Fisher (2022) and Kenneth Fisher (2023). Surviving are his wife, Rosanne Adams, sons Michael (Dolly) Fisher, Jim (Jayme) Fisher, and Chris (Elizabeth) Fisher, sister-in-law Peggy Fisher, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
The family would like to especially thank Michele, Mandy, Patty and Michaela from Beacon Hospice for the exceptional support and care he received during his last days, and to the other members of his "village" who assisted him and his family – Tanis and Bill Furbish, Athena Hanson, Larry Hosack, Lisa and Randy Bolduc, Cliffton Guy, Shannon Buzzell, Matthew Romigh, Jacquelyn Isis Cross, Kathy Delozier, and Michael Adams. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Eliot Historical Society or the charity of one's choice.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2024, from 2 to 4 PM at the J.S. Pelkey and Son Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 19, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord in St. Raphael Parish Church, 6 Whipple Road, Kittery, Maine 03904. Care for the Fisher family has been entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
