Obituary

Robert (Bob) Heon of Somersworth passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, at the age of 89. Bob was born in Somersworth on July 11, 1925, the youngest son of George Heon and Mildred Pinkham Heon. He was a lifelong resident of his beloved city and a lifelong member of St. Martin s Parish. Part of America s Greatest Generation, he proudly served his country in World War II and survived the Normandy Invasion on D-Day as a member of the U.S. 313th Infantry. Following the war, Bob returned to Somersworth, where he married Lucille Chasse in 1950. Their young son, Mark Heon, died in infancy. Lucille passed away in September 1963 after an unsuccessful battle with cancer. In June 1965, he married Bertha LeHoullier Toussaint. They were married for 22 years before her passing on August 22, 1987. Bob was also predeceased by his two older brothers, Henry Pinkham in 1970 and Fred Pinkham in 2006. Bob was a longtime member of the Somersworth Fire Department and was named Chief in 1972. He also served his community as a multi-term city councilman in the early 1970 s. Active in Democratic Party politics, Bob was invited to the White House for a small private luncheon with President and Mrs. Carter in October 1979. Accompanied by his wife, Bertha, he represented the state of New Hampshire at a luncheon attended by a handful of couples from the other New England states. He was actively involved in Cub Scouting for 25 years and served as Scout Master for Pack 195. Under Pastor Bob Biron, he and Bertha also enjoyed working with St. Martin s Youth Group. Bob and Bertha were founding members of The Jesters Square Dance Club, where Bob served as president during the Club s early years. During his retirement years, Bob assisted other seniors through his volunteer service with The Homemakers, for which he was honored by the Governor of New Hampshire. He is survived by his two adopted children, Diane Wagner and husband, Jack, of York, ME, and Donald Toussaint and wife, Libby, of Camarillo, CA; two grandsons, Scott and Ryan Toussaint; one great-grandson, Julien Toussaint; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation and vigil will be at Bernier Funeral Home, 49 South Street in Somersworth, on Friday, February 13, from 6 to 8pm. The funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Robert Biron at St. Martin Catholic Church, 120 Maple Street in Somersworth on Saturday, February 14, at 11:30 a.m. A reception will follow in the church hall.
