Obituary

Eliot, ME - Robert Gordon McKinney (Papa) passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on July 27, 2020 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Suzanne for 60 years. He was born on December 17, 1936 in Boston, Massachusetts and is predeceased by his mother Irene McKinney.

Bob graduated from Mount Assumption Institute in Plattsburg, New York and then proudly served in the United States Navy. After his military service, he moved back to Berlin, N.H. and worked for a car dealership until he found a 40-year career with American Mutual Insurance Company continuing with Lumber Insurance Company as a consultant until the end of June 2020. During the early years of supporting his family Bob worked in Boston and would hitchhike to Boston on Sunday and back to Berlin on Friday. In 1964, the family moved to Massachusetts where he and Sue raised their 3 children.

Bob had a passion for sports and his kids. Growing up he was a great athlete and then became an amazing coach in Newburyport. He coached basketball, baseball, hockey and even dabbled in horseback riding. He was truly appreciated by the kids he coached as well as the parents. Bob never missed a sporting event and could always be heard with his positive comments teaching us how to be the best we could be whether during a game or in life. He always taught respect and teamwork to everyone he had the opportunity to work with.

Along with his dear wife (best friend), Bob is survived by his son Tom and wife Dee Dee, daughter Debby and husband Shawn Foley, daughter Diana and husband Bob Komusin, his sister Susie Sawyer and grandchildren Richie, Micheala, Ashley, Nicole, Daniel, Josh, Evan and Lauren. These grandchildren brought special sparkle to his eye and nothing made him happier than spending time with them (and their pets). He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was a loving and thoughtful husband, father and grandfather. He was a fan of all Boston sport's teams and he enjoyed the game of golf. He loved God, country and family. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. The family thanks all the healthcare providers who helped Bob. A special thank you to our hospice nurses Charlotte and Patty for their caring and compassion. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the York Hospital Hospice.

A private family service will be held at a later date. Care of the McKinney Family has been entrusted to the J S Pelkey and Son Funeral Home.
