Robert Anthony
Pomella, Usn Mmcm (Ss) (Ret)
Dec 25, 1936 — Feb 17, 2016
Kittery Point, ME - Robert "Bob" Anthony Pomella, USN MMCM(SS) (RET), 79, served his final mission on 17 February 2016 in Kittery Point, Maine surrounded by family.
Born December 25, 1936, he was the oldest son of Italian immigrants, and grew up in Brighton, MA.
He served our Nation in the US Navy and spent most of his 32 year career on the high seas on submarines—the USS Albacore, the USS Barbero, the USS Bremerton, the USS Sea Robin, the USS Groton and a cable layer, the USS Aeolus. He was awarded numerous commendations and medals during his tenure and upon retiring, was the Harbormaster of Kittery Point, Maine for seven years. He commercially lobstered, was a volunteer Kittery Point fireman, and was a member of the Elks, the Fleet Reserve, the VFW, Masonic Fraternity and the Shriners.
He was happiest when he was on the water, enjoyed a lifelong love of the ocean, and owned several boats during the course of his lifetime.
Travel was another of his passions, and he traveled extensively all over the world with several trips to Italy, his favorite foreign destination, and numerous cruises. He was an avid tennis player, and he was able to play year round between his homes in Florida and Maine. Golf was another avocation that he enjoyed, and he was active within the Edgewater Club cooking and serving Sunday breakfasts and supporting club events.
Bob was known for his deep knowledge of Military History, was honest and true to his convictions, and believed in following through on what he set out to achieve. He had a wry sense of humor, quick wit, ready smile, and a strong work ethic and moral code.
He was known as a man of few words, but was always there to lend a hand when you needed him without being asked. He was loved and respected by friends both North and South. He was the Patriarch of his big family, and organized the family reunion every year as his friends and his family were everything to him, especially his two grand-daughters, Karly and Chloe.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Concetta Pomella, formerly of Brighton, MA; three brothers: Ronald Pomella, Thomas Pomella and Edward Pomella, all formerly of Marshfield, MA; and two nephews—Dr. Richard Pomella, formerly of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Jonathan Christian, formerly of Katonah, NY.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carman; his daughter, Lynne of West Newton, MA; his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Paul Finklestein, of Glastonbury, CT; his two granddaughters, Karly and Chloe Finklestein of Glastonbury, CT; his sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Gerry Feeley of Waltham, MA; his sister-in-law, Sharon Pomella of Marshfield, MA; his sister-in-law, Evelyn Pomella, of Marshfield, MA; and several beloved nieces and nephews as well as grandnieces and grandnephews.
The family would like to express special thanks to the staffs at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital Infusion Center, Dana Farber, Brigham and Woman's Palliative Care Unit, Cornerstone, and Dr. Carlos Palacio and Dr. Christine Wasilewski for their professional and compassionate care for Bob during his illness and final days.
