Eliot- Roland Robert. " Rollie" Fernald, 82 of State Road in Eliot, died on May 26, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family following a short illness.
Born in Kittery on February 27, 1939 he was the son of the late Lawrence and Isoline Fernald. He was raised in and remained a lifelong resident of Eliot. Rollie attended Eliot Schools, graduating from Eliot High School with the class of 1958. He went on to continue his education at Gorham State teachers College prior to entering the US Airforce.
He served in the United States Air Force from 1961-1965 stationed at Lackenheath AFB, England in charge of the Ammo Dump, housing 500 lb bombs, fighter plane rockets, and early nuclear weaponry.
He married. His loving wife of fifty years Barbara (Stewart ) Fernald on August 17, 1963 and together they made their home in Eliot and raised their family.
Rollie loved to play sports, enjoying Basketball, baseball, and football in high school and college. He worked as a systems analyst , computer programmer, and designed and wrote computer programs for large manufacturing companies in New England. He became the data processing manager for two divisions of a manufacturing company in Manchester prior to his retirement in 1995. Rollie was a professional Taxidermist preserving all types of trophies for local outdoorsman for many years. He operated his own business R&R Taxidermy set up in his barn on his property.
An active member of his community Rollie was elected to the board of selectmen serving for thirteen and a half years five of those as the chair of the board. He served as a member and past president of the Great East Lake Association, Brooks Memorial Park Trustees, and the Board of Directors for the Footprints Food Pantry and Eliot Alumni Association . He loved fishing, hunting, golf, horseshoes, and playing pool with his best friend Doug.
Rollie had deep love for his family, his beloved town of Eliot and the family at the Town Office.
He is survived by his son Glenn, daughter Pam Keefer who was always by his side and her fiancée Bob Rivers, his sister Mildred Hoyt, grandsons, Jeremy MacRitchie, Travis Keefer, Cole and Declan Fernald ,great grandchildren;Archer and Alice MacRitchie and Waylon Keefer as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and wife Barbara.
Friends are invited to visit with his family on Monday June 7, 2021 from 2-4 pm in the JS Pelkey Funeral Home 125 Old Post Road Kittery Maine 03904, where a memorial service will be celebrated at 4pm in the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to Footprints Food Pantry POB 246 Kittery Maine 03904. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.jspelkeyfuneralhome.com .
