Obituary

Roland Thomas Nadeau Roland Thomas Nadeau died peacefully at his home on Main Street on Friday, January 13, 2012 surrounded by his children. Roland was born on December 12, 1927 in Somersworth to Alma Gagnon and Thomas Nadeau and raised by his loving grandmother, Dorila St. Pierre, at 191 Main Street. He attended St. Martin s School and completed two years of high school at Universit Sainte-Anne in Pointe-de-l glise, Nova Scotia. Roland met his bride Lorraine Gauthier of Rochester when they worked at Clarostat Mfg. in Dover. They married on February 16, 1952 at Holy Rosary Church, Rochester. Together they built a home and raised a happy family. Roland and Lorraine were devout parishioners of St. Martin s Church in Somersworth sharing life for 53 years, until Lorraine passed away on August 1, 2005. Roland is also predeceased by his son, Thomas on August 7, 1976, and his sister, Rita Vaillancourt on May 4, 2010. Roland s surviving children include Denise and her husband, Stephen Dinsmore, of East Lyme, CT; Irene and her husband, Orrin Mills, of Springfield, VA; Elaine and her husband, James McCaffery, of Fredericksburg, VA; Marie Nadeau of East Kingston, NH; Michael and his wife, Debbie Lyon of Tracy, CA; Gerard Nadeau, of Somersworth; and Nancy Nadeau of Dover. He leaves his sisters, Irene Leclerc and her husband, Edouard, both of Somersworth, and Alma O Hearn and her husband, Joe, of Exeter. He also leaves his brother, Leo Lessard and his wife, Elaine, of Derry. He leaves his grandchildren: Brandon Dinsmore, Thomas Mills, Ambre Mills and her husband, CPT Jeffrey Hayes, US Army, Jacqueline Mills, James McCaffery, Katherine McCaffery, Heather McCaffery, Angela Nelson, Christian Nadeau, and Elizabeth Nadeau; his great-grandchildren Daniel and Joshua Hayes; and numerous nieces and nephews. Roland was a carpenter with J. Breen Construction before enlisting in the Army on March 5, 1946. After basic training in Fort Lewis, WA, he was a carpenter with Company D, 7742nd Engineer Base DEP Group in the European Theater of Operations. After his honorable discharge on December 22, 1948, he returned home and worked as a riveting machine operator at Clarostat from 1949 to 1950. Roland was recalled to active duty on July 23, 1951 to serve in Korea as a Crane Operator for HQ Company, 2nd Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment. During the Korean War, his regiment was part of the 7th Infantry Division and saw action during 1951 along the famed 38th parallel. CPL Roland Nadeau was honorably discharged again on August 31, 1952 and returned to Somersworth. His awards include: the Army of Occupation Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, Combat Infantryman Badge. His unit was awarded the Army Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation during his service in Korea, as well as the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. All participating service members were retroactively awarded the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Korea Medal, and the Korean War Service Medal in 1954. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 8 in Dover. Before settling in Somersworth, Roland worked on the US Coast and Geodetic Survey in Florida and Georgia for the Department of Commerce from 1954 to 1955. He started work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a sheet metal worker in 1963, retiring as planner and estimator supervisor for Shop 17 on January 3, 1985. He worked on the USS NAUTILUS (SSN 571), the first nuclear-powered submarine in the U.S. Navy. Calling hours will be at the Bernier Funeral Home, 49 South Street, in Somersworth on Monday, January 16, from 6:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 17, at 12:30 p.m. in the Catholic Community of St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Martin s Church, Maple Street with Rev. Michael Taylor, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family would like to extend their thanks to the nurses and staff of VNA Hospice of Rochester for the exceptional kindness and care they provided to Roland during his illness. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to St. Martin s Church of Somersworth or to Hospice at the Rochester District Visiting Nurse Association.
