Ronald
Ames
d. Jan 2, 2023
Ron Ames was born and raised in the Niagara region of Canada, and was educated at McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario. After graduating in 1965 with a degree in Classics (and every course in Art History he could fit into his schedule) Ron attended the Ontario College of Education and the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. He taught high school Art and Drama at Burlington Central High School in Ontario for ten years.
In 1976 Ron shifted careers, moving to New York City to study Theatrical Design and he became associated with the Harper-Nidha Studio - makers of props, costumes, millinery and masks for many of Broadway's major theatre producers. Other employers included the Muppet organization.
While in New York, Ron met his life partner, Frank C. Frisbee III, and together they moved to Kittery Point, Maine in 1985 and became businessmen. Ron and Frank opened the Whaleback Inn Bed and Breakfast and were actively involved in the operations of Cap'n Simeon's Galley and Frisbee's 1828 Market at Pepperrell Cove.
During his 38 years living in the Portsmouth-Kittery area, Ron has been an active supporter of local theatre as a producer, director, designer, costumer and even playwright. In recent decades he has been a prolific curator and display coordinator for the Kittery Historical and Naval Museum.
Friends in New England, New York and Ontario were sad to hear of Ron's passing on January 2, 2023 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. He had recently celebrated his 80 th birthday. Former students and colleagues will miss his daily repartee on Facebook.
Donations to the Kittery Historical and Naval Museum in memory of Ron Ames will be gratefully accepted. A special tribute day for Ron will be held at the Museum on Saturday April 22 nd from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Tours of Ron's many displays will be led by Museum volunteers. Admission is free.
