Obituary

Kittery- Russell E. Hersey 92, passed away on June 5, 2015. He as born on February 5, 1923 in Portsmouth, NH the son of Chester and Abby Elizabeth ( Brigham ) Hersey, he was a 1943 graduate of Portsmouth High School and has made his home in Kittery since 1956. He was a US Army Veteran, serving with Gen. Patten's 3rd Army in WW II participating in the invasion of Normandy, France and the Battle of the Bulge. He was called back into the service in 1950 and participated in the Inchol landing in Korea. He received many awards including the European, African Middle East Campaign medal, good conduct medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Meritorious Unit Emblem. He was employed for many years as an architect for several local architectural firms and had retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as the Senior Architect , Design Director of the Public Works Department, and contract surveillance representative. He was a member of the Middle Street Baptist Church, was a past Grand of Osgood 1.0.0. F Lodge 48, a life member of the American Legion Post 188 of Eliot Maine. He was a Lionel Train Enthusiast and had built a large train layout in his home. He enjoyed the out doors and worked in his yard and gardens. He loved his family and beamed when he visited with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He adored the children. He is predeceased by his loving wife of fifty six years, Marcia (Emery) Hersey who passed away in 2006. As well as his brother Kenneth Hersey who was killed in action in the Normandy Landing in France. He is survived by twin daughters Joyce E. Hersey of Eliot, Maine, and her two children Kathleen J. Plaisted and Brian S. Plaisted; Janet M. Schoff of York Maine and her husband Larry C. Schoff and their children Amanda L. Schoff of Newburyport, MA, Alissa D. Fleming of Beaverton, OR, Adam J. Schoff of Beaverton, OR, and Kevin M. Schoff of Alfred, ME. as well as, 3 great grandchildren and a brother Nelson D. Hersey of Kittery Maine and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held on Friday at 11am in South Cemetery on Harmony Hill in Portsmouth NH. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.jspelkeyfuneralhome.com.
