Sandra J. Smith died June 30th, 2026 at the age of 87, at Avita of Wells in Maine. She was preceded by her mother Elsie Cecilia Hanlon and her father Joseph Russell Smith, as well as her son Clifford (Cliff) Jenkins. Survivors include a sister Linda Walton, brother Joseph (Jay) Smith and his wife, Sue Smith. Nephew Michael Hall, nieces Candis Smith Regan, Becky Hall, Sarah (Smith) Pierson, Jessika Smith, and her beloved Gordon Setter, Nikki.
Sandra was a member of the R.W. Traip Academy class of 1957. Shortly after graduating she made a career at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for the Department of the Navy, Naval Sea Systems as the Material Program Division Head, breaking a glass ceiling for a woman at the time. She was the first woman to hold a moose license in the state of Maine and she piloted a single engine plane as well.
She loved the outdoors, whether it was hunting at her cabin in Chesuncook Village, enjoying her annual stay at the Isles of Shoals or skiing down various slopes in Maine. She also enjoyed several trips to Bermuda where she met up with relatives found through her genealogy research. Sandra was a proprietor of the Portsmouth Athenaeum where she could share her love of reading, history, and art. Sandra volunteered for the Eliot Police Auxiliary and for the York Hospital.
