Eliot- Sherman R. Emery 92 of Goodwin Road in Eliot died on January 10, 2017 at Durgin Pines. Born in Eliot on March 19, 1924 he was a son of the late John L. and Mamie (Goodwin) Emery. He attended locals schools, graduating from Eliot High School.
Sherman served his country as a member of the United States Army Air Corps during World War Two before returning to continue his education.
He graduated manga cum laude from Boston University in 1949 with a bachelor of arts degree and went on to earn a master of arts degree from Columbia University. In 1952 while making his home in Manhattan, he joined Interior Design Magazine and soon became the long time editor of the publication serving until his retirement. He enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the interior design field earning many awards.
Upon retirement he and his partner of over sixty years Harold Merry, returned to his home town of Eliot where they continued their successful book and autograph business until Harolds death in 2008.
He was a stalwart fan of Opera music and even during his time in Durgin Pines where he was blessed to be a part of the Maine Music and Memory Program offering memory impaired residents an iPod filled with their favorite music, he could name his favorite performer Maria Callas on the first note.
Sherman enjoyed his flower gardens at his home on the " Hill" in Eliot and was blessed with wonderful care at Durgin Pines.
He is survived by his niece Janet Tibbetts of Dover and nephew John and his wife Janet Emery of Eliot.
A memorial service will be celebrated on Thursday January 19, 2017at 11am in the JS Pelkey Funeral Home 125 Old Post Road Kittery Maine 03904 with the Rev. Dr. Beth Hoffman officiating.
