Obituary

Sylvia Elaine MacKay, 98, born Sylvia Leavitt on March 4 th 1924 to Fred and Louise Leavitt, died on August 2 nd 2022 at the Wentworth Home in Dover, her home for the past 4 years.  She was born and raised in Eliot and lived all but the last 4 years in Eliot.  She attended Eliot Schools graduating from Eliot High School in 1943.

Sylvia worked at Sylvania in Dover during WWII.  After the war she met and married her husband of 47 years, Edson MacKay.  She and her husband built their home and raised their family less than a mile from her childhood home.   They raised goats and chickens on their little farm.  Sylvia was in charge of the livestock and the garden while her husband worked at the Shipyard.  All the years of farming and livestock came to a halt when they had 3 children in 13 months and Sylvia had to start chasing children instead of goats.

Sylvia enjoyed working outside at her home clearing the fields, growing fruit trees, picking blueberries and gardening.  She also enjoyed hiking and walking through the woods and seeing all the wildlife in her backyard.  Her binoculars were always within reach.

There wasn't a craft she didn't want to try.  She knitted and crocheted everything from mittens to hats, sweaters to afghans which were all enjoyed by young and old alike.

She was a member of the Methodist Church of Eliot.  She served on numerous committees and clubs and taught Sunday School.  For over 40 years Sylvia managed the Church Thrift Shop,  first at the East Eliot Methodist Church, then later at the Eliot United Methodist Church.

Getting together with her sisters for socializing, coffee and a rousing game of Canasta was a weekly event.  Sylvia was good at games and always seemed to win.  She enjoyed reading books, as well as, completing  puzzles of all kinds:  Jigsaws, Jumbles, Sudoku and Crosswords.

She is survived by:  one son, Timothy and his wife Brenda of Biddeford, Me; two daughters, Nancy Bartlett and her husband Randy of Eliot & Julie Johnson and her husband Paul of Eliot;  one grandson, Drew Bartlett of Eliot; one brother, Norman Leavitt of Eliot.

Born into a large family she had 9 brothers and sisters.  She was predeceased by:  Wilfred Leavitt, Laurence Leavitt, Lyndon Leavitt, Phyllis Leavitt, Robert Leavitt, Richard Leavitt, Ruth Richards and Dorothy Blaisdell.

Many thanks to the staff, who became her family, at The Wentworth Home of Dover for the care they gave Sylvia for the final 4 years of her life.  She couldn't have been in better hands and she was very appreciative of that.  Also, a Thank You to the Wentworth Homecare and Hospice for all they do.
