Theresann
D’Angelo
Feb 24, 1936 — Apr 22, 2026
Theresann D'Angelo, a nationally recognized abstract landscape painter, known for her unique use of color to depict what she described as the romance and spirituality of Coastal Maine, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 22nd in Dover, N.H.
She was 90 years old and had been living at the Residence at Silver Square in Dover for the past two years, after moving from her home of almost four decades on Gerrish Island in Kittery Point.
Theresann was a longtime member of the Ogunquit Art Association and the Kittery Art Association and exhibited at several galleries in southern Maine and New Hampshire, Birmingham, Alabama, and at "Family Tree Fine Art," a gallery she and her husband owned in Portsmouth in the early 2000's.
"I concentrate on those moments when the boundaries between truth and fantasy, dreams and memories, become blurred and unimportant," Theresann said, describing her work several years ago.
Before pursuing her passion for painting full-time, Theresann was a real estate agent in Portsmouth in the 1990's. Her early years were spent raising five children with her husband, Dr. Ernest D'Angelo, a well-known ear, nose, and throat surgeon in Portsmouth, who died 14 months ago. His passing, after more than 66 years of marriage, was a heartbreaking loss for Theresann.
Born in Waterbury, CT, on February 24, 1936, Theresann attended Crosby High School where she met her future husband. She received her B.A. in Education at the University of Connecticut and was briefly an elementary school teacher.
After marrying Dr. D'Angelo, she moved from place to place for her husband's medical training including Ottawa, Canada; Quincy, MA; Oahu, Hawaii, where Dr. D'Angelo served in the U.S. Navy and was a medic in Vietnam, and then Burlington, VT for five years.
During that decade, Theresann gave birth to her five children. She and her family eventually settled in Portsmouth in 1970 and then in Greenland, NH. The D'Angelo family moved to Kittery Point in 1986.
After her children were grown, Theresann returned to college—this time to the University of New Hampshire in Durham--to formally study painting and earn a Fine Arts degree. Her work almost immediately attracted the attention of art critics.
"Theresann paints vibrant and vivid landscapes. Purple haze permeates the land and the sea, with burning yellow and gold hues bursting across the land and sky," wrote the arts critic for the Birmingham (AL) News in 2005.
Theresann was also a golfer who enjoyed playing at the Wentworth Country Club in New Castle, NH and at Naples (FL) Heritage Golf Club, where she and her husband had a winter residence.
Theresann was one of four children of the late Leo and Theresa Maher of Waterbury, CT and Needham, MA. She is also predeceased by her sister, Arlene Baker of Prospect, CT and two brothers, John (Jack) Maher of Salem, MA and Leo (Bucky) Maher of Wareham, MA.
Theresann is survived by her five children: Lynne Many and her partner, Rich Gill of Kittery Point, Ernie D'Angelo and his wife Lisa of Kittery, Jill D'Angelo of Portland, ME; Leo D'Angelo of Argyle, TX and Amy Maness and her husband Nathaniel of Newington, NH.
She was a devoted grandmother to eight grandchildren including Josh Many and his wife Tiffany of Denver, Colorado; Ben Many and his wife Joy of Wolcott, Vermont; Chloe Many of Norwalk, CT; Ernie D'Angelo of Detroit, MI; Jackson Maness of Los Angeles, CA; Mack D'Angelo of Kittery and Amber and Ashley D'Angelo of College Station, TX. She leaves behind three great-grandchildren: Liam Many of Denver and Kaya and Neva Many of Wolcott, VT.
She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Joe Bergantino and his wife, Candy Altman, of Chestnut Hill, MA; sister-in-law Ginny Maher of Wareham, MA and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, May 12th from 4-6 p.m. at the J.S. Pelkey and Son Funeral Home at 125 Old Post Road in Kittery. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, 6 Whipple Road in Kittery at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13th .
