Obituary

SOMERSWORTH - Without ever losing the smile from her face or the twinkle in her eye, Viola R. Tanguay, 90, died in Durham on September 21, 2013 after a period of failing health. Vi was born on May 15, 1923, one of six girls, to Albert and Lumina Demers. She lived most of her life in Somersworth, later splitting time between Zephyr Hills, Florida and Rochester. She was married to Lionel H. Tanguay on May 4, 1946 and they recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. In the rush to get to the altar in those post-war days, the wedding was at 7:30 in the morning. Others on that day, in that church, were at 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Vi's smile was contagious; freely given and quickly returned. Even as she struggled at the end of life, she always greeted family, friends and caregivers at Sprucewoods in Durham with a smile of recognition and appreciation. What a sweetheart! Vi and Nel have three children, Bill Tanguay and wife Susan of Durham, Dr. Gary Tanguay (deceased on April 21, 2013) and wife Marilynn of West Boylston, Massachusetts, and Gail Cook and husband Peter of Dewitt, Michigan. They have seven grandchildren, Sarah Robinson, David Tanguay, Kate Kent, Jonathan Tanguay, Elizabeth Melehov, Molly Cook, and Stephen Cook, with whom she laughed, danced, listened and talked. They also have six great-grandchildren. She is survived by sisters Laurence Hopkins and Madeleine Perrault of Somersworth. Vi had been an active golfer at Cocheco Country Club, where only the strokes outnumbered the laughs. She was a lifelong member of St. Martin's Parish in Somersworth. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Martin's Church in Somersworth on Friday, September 27 at 11 a.m. With Rev. Michael S. Taylor, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth. Share a smile today. She would like that. Arrangements are entrusted to the Bernier Funeral Home, 49 South Street, Somersworth, N.H. www.bernierfuneralhome.net.
