Dover- Virginia A. Kenney, 91, died peacefully on December 9, 2016 after a brief illness. She was born in Edgewood, RI,, on September 25, 1925, the daughter of Francis H. and Helen (Carroll) Curren. Virginia was the widow of John F. Kenney who died in 1984. She attended elementary school and high school in Cranston, RI. She was a graduate of The College of New Rochelle and later received a M.Ed from The University of New Hampshire. She taught kindergarten in Providence, RI. and was a Reading Specialist in the Dover, NH, school system for 22 years.
Virginia was a Girl Scout leader, a Cub Scout Den Mother, and did publicity for the Camp Fire Girls Program. Upon retirement Virginia served as a volunteer for NH Public Television, and spent many years on the Board of the Dover Children's Home. Gini was a member of the Great Bay Yacht Club, the NH Retired Teachers Association, Alpha Delta Kappa Educational Society, as well as the Dover Historical Society. An avid reader, she belonged to a book group for more than 30 years. She traveled and sailed extensively.
Virginia is survived by 4 children, Christine Hanrahan (David) of Kensington, MD, Kathleen O'Neill (William) of Naples, FL, Carol Phipps of York, Maine, and John Kenney of Saunderstown, RI. Her grandchildren are Carolyn Hanrahan and Daniel Hanrahan, both of Philadelphia, PA, Michael Hanrahan of Kensington, MD, William O'Neill, Jr, of Washington, DC, Garrett O'Neill of Orlando, FL, Elizabeth O'Neill of Tallahassee, FL, Jonathan Phipps and Erica Mirick of York, ME, Gregory Phipps of Berwick, ME, Caitlin Kenney of Naples, FL, Brian Kenney and Kevin Kenney of Saunderstown, RI. She had six great-grandchildren, Adalaide and Edward Hanrahan, Henry and Winsor Mirick, Sawyer Phipps and Bradley Phipps. She is also survived by numerous cousins, neices and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Helen C. Armstrong, of Exeter, N.H., and her brother, Francis H. Curren, of Jamestown, R.I.
Services: A Memorial Mass will take place on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Christopher by the Sea Church at 301-319 York Street, York, Maine.
