Obituary

York Harbor – Virginia Theresa Marrotte, 83, of Sentry Hill Retirement Community in York Harbor died on July 17,2017 at her home with loved ones by her side.

Born in Brooklyn, New York on February 13, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Julia (Cleary) Merrill. At the age of thirteen, she moved with her family to Troy, New Hampshire where she met and would later marry her high school sweetheart and loving husband of over sixty-five years, John E. Marrotte. They settled in Troy where they would raise their family. Virginia returned to school in her forties to earn her Bachelor of Arts in 1972 and her Master's in Education from Keene State College in 1979. She enjoyed a long career teaching elementary school. She taught at the Jaffrey Grade School in Jaffrey, NH, and was proud to have taught in New Hampshire's last one-room school house in Landaff, NH, as well as at Linwood Elementary School in Lincoln, NH.

She and her family enjoyed travel throughout the US and internationally, including cross-country family vacations by train, driving trips to Alaska and travel to Ireland. She enjoyed membership at Immaculate Conception Church in Troy, NH and St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Woodsville, NH. Virginia loved to read, play Scrabble, knit, and enjoy nature and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. She was a true and loyal friend, cherishing lifelong friendships. She was a talented baker, and especially loved baking for family gatherings. She was especially famous for her waffles and cookies, as well as fish-frys with copious fish caught by her husband and family in local secret fishing holes.

Virginia's first love was her family, and she was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend. She is survived by her beloved husband John E. Marrotte, of York Harbor, ME and her children, daughter Monica Crystal and her husband Philip of York, ME, son Robert Marrotte of Port Orange, Florida, son Ronald Marrotte and his wife Susan of Jaffrey, NH, and daughter Marilyn Marrotte and her husband Amos Blanchard of York, ME, and granddaughters Stefanie Crystal and her husband Thomas Mitchell of Wells, ME and Tiffany Marrotte of Jaffrey, NH, as well as many dear extended family members and friends. She was predeceased by her parents and brother, Joseph Merrill of Troy, NH.

A service and celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at 3pm at the JS Pelkey Funeral Home, 125Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine 03904. A graveside service will be held at 1pm on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 in Mountain View Cemetery in Troy, NH. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.jspelkeyfuneralhome.com.
