Obituary

Eliot – William N. Barrett, 87 of Spinney Creek Road in Eliot died on Wednesday, January 12th, 2022, peacefully at his home following an extended battle with cancer.

Born in Boston, MA on December 26, 1934 the son of the late Benjamin Barrett and Helen Conroy.

He entered the United States Air Force in 1952 at the age of 17, retiring after 20 years of service.

In 1953 he married his sweetheart Laura (Dunn) Barrett and enjoyed sixty-eight years of marriage together. After being stationed at Pease Airforce Base, they settled in Eliot where they raised their family and were active in their church and local community.

In 1973 he entered the Civil Service and went back to work at Pease Air Force Base as a foreman and supervisor of the plumbing department. He retired from Civil Service in 1990 with the closing of Pease Airforce Base.

Affectionately known as "Bill" and "Papa", he was a devoted husband and family man and enjoyed spending time with his wife, six children, seventeen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. As the oldest of three children he remained incredibly close to his brother and sister as well as his numerous cousins.

A lifelong Catholic, he was a member of the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord and regularly attended mass at Saint Raphael's in Kittery and Our Lady of the Angels in South Berwick, was a member of the Knights of Columbus and an early supporter of the Footprints Food Pantry in Kittery.

A strong supporter of both military and law enforcement, Bill was active with the Pease Greeters, the VFW, was a supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project and was a 2011 graduate of the Eliot Citizen Police Academy.

Bill developed an early love for camping and the outdoors and was an avid and successful hunter and fisherman, a passion that he shared and passed on to his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Laura of Eliot, ME; son Richard of Auburn, NH; daughter Susan and her husband Robert Denault of Kittery, ME; son Timothy and his wife Jennifer of Kennebunkport, ME; son James and his wife Cindy of Mount Pleasant, NC; son Stephen and his wife Anne of South Berwick, ME; daughter Lori-Joan and her husband Gary Gross of Santa Maria, CA; brother Robert of Belmont, MA; and sister Marjorie Maxwell of Winchester, MA; as well as seventeen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to visit with Bill's family on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 from 4-6pm in the JS Pelkey and Son Funeral Home at 125 Old Post Road Kittery Maine 03904. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 20, 2022 at 11am at Our Lady of the Angels, Catholic Church in South Berwick, at 62 Agamenticus Rd, South Berwick, ME 03908 with Fr. Scott Mower.
