Obituary

Somersworth-William (Bill) Joseph McLaughlin, 69, of Somersworth, devoted Husband, Father, and Grandfather, departed this life June 16th, 2016 in Oviedo, Florida. Born May 17th, 1947 in Boston, Mass, he was the son of the late Raymond O. McLaughlin and the late Mary E. (Wirth) McLaughlin.

Bill moved with his family from South Boston to Somersworth in 1973 and began his employment at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he worked as a Nuclear Technician on submarines for most of his career. He retired in 2002.

He raised his four children in his home on "The Hill" and he could be found on the sidelines or court side of the many Somersworth High School sporting events in which his children participated during the 1980's and 1990's. It brought him joy to watch his children play and then to bestow his fatherly advice upon them after their games.

After he retired, Bill kept busy by riding his bicycle, playing racquetball and tennis, or taking Spin classes at The Works Athletic Club in Somersworth where he was a longtime member and was known, loved and respected by many.

Bill will be remembered for his love of history, his ability to fix just about anything (and if he didn't know, he would just read a book about it), and his love for his wife, children and grandchildren.

Bill is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of nearly 47 years, Elizabeth A. (McColgan) McLaughlin of Somersworth; his son, Brian McLaughlin and his wife Lavone of Oviedo, Florida; his son, Brad McLaughlin of Somersworth; his daughter, Shannon McLaughlin of Somersworth; his daughter, Colleen McMurdo and her husband, Taylor of Fayetteville, North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Cameron McLaughlin of Somersworth, Logan McLaughlin of South Berwick, Maine, Emily and Erin McMurdo of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Jordyn and Brooklyn McLaughlin of Oviedo, Florida, and Mateo Rodriguez of Somersworth; his sister, Marlene Flattich and her husband Philip of Hull, Mass; his brother, Thomas McLaughlin and his wife, Barbara of Vail, Arizona and numerous nieces and nephews.
