Obituary

Zacharias H Kagiliery, 93, of Ogunquit, formally of Kittery, passed away on January 17, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Zack was born at home on July 9, 1930, the eldest son of Harry and Mary Kagiliery.  He attended local schools, graduating from Traip Academy.  Following graduation, Zack worked in the family store, Kittery Fruit, until being drafted into the Army in 1951. Upon discharge, he returned to work in the family business, where he met and later married, Nancy Grover and raised three children, Maria, Katina, and Harry during their 19 years of marriage. They remained lifelong friends and shared many family celebrations together.

Zack was very active in the Kittery community, serving on the town Council for 12 years, various committees, as a volunteer fire fighter, and as president of the Kittery Historical Museum.

Upon selling Kittery Fruit, Zack joined the Portsmouth Naval shipyard Fire Department.  After serving 20 years with the department, he retired in 1990.  He then worked several summers as a parking lot attendant for the Town of Ogunquit.

Sports was a common theme throughout his life, from high school on, participating in coaching and umpiring the local little league baseball teams with longtime friend Peenie Trefethen, to watching his children and grandchildren play the games.  He attended every sports event that he could, and especially loved, watching his daughters and, later, grandchildren playing basketball yelling outencouragement and maybe some suggestions. Just ask the referees!

Zack met the love of his life on a blind date and marriage followed six years later. Finally. Zack and Judy enjoyed 37 wonderful years together with their numerous cats, and later two special Westies, Riley and Roxy. Zack was very proud of his Greek heritage, and we were lucky enough to finally visit the family homeland of Greece.

In addition to sports, hunting, and Westerns, fishing ruled his world.Every year for over 70 years he fished West Grand Lake and travelled to other fishing holes with another lifelong friend Kevin Adams. On one of these fishing trips, he landed a 40 pound togue which hung in the Kittery trading Post for many years.

Zack touched so many people's lives through his kindness, his gentle manner, his compassion and charming smile. The world has lost some sparkle, but heaven will shine more brightly. We were very lucky to be a part of " Zack's world".  1 - 4 - 3 !

Zack was predeceased by his parents and brother Teddy.

He is survived by his loving wife, Judy; sister, Zaffie  Hadiaris, daughter, Maria and husband, Charlie Smith; daughter, Katina and partner Scott Taylor; son, Harry, and wife, Jackie; stepchildren, Kimberly Bohn; Jamie Shaw and wife, Rachel; sister-in-law, Gail Phillips of Kansas and good friend, Howard Mathews of York.

Zack was also a beloved grandfather (Papou) and leaves behind 12 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
