Obituary

Zelphia G Potter of Kittery Point joined our heavenly father peacefully.

She was the first of 10 children born in Hurricane, West Virginia, to Lawrence Paul and Goldie Marie. Of the ten, she helped rear her younger siblings using her natural loving, maternal instincts and skills. Jerry, as she was referred to and Dean by her siblings, met and married her Navy Mechanic in 1950, shortly after moving and settling in Kittery Point to be closer to her husband's Kittery Point family.

Jerry was a homemaker, a nighttime nurse at the Homestead Nursing Home, and later a waitress and maker of lobster rolls at Chauncey Creek. She met stars like football player Roger Staubach, Tom Bergeron, and many others. Her favorites were the regular customers who came back season after season.

She loved spending her time with family and friends. She was often found with Grammy Phylis playing rummy when coming home after school, where we'd sit and drink tea, complete our homework, and listen to their stories of growing up. She loved playing rummy, scrabble – where she's always win, and coloring with her great-grand daughters while sucking on dum-dum lollipops. In quiet times, she would needlepoint, sew, or iron many uniforms for members of the Navy stationed at PNSY. She enjoyed doing the New York Times crossword puzzles and watching her feathered friends on her birdfeeders and other creatures in her back yard. Besides having family around, her favorite Christmas present was getting a 50-pound bag of black oil sunflower seeds for her birds!

Other fond memories were Uptacamp during cousin's vacation week, where pool noodle fights brought young and old together in frenzied laughter. Kayaking at the age of 90 was a sight to see, and she loved it. From kayaking to Jeeping, there was nothing she wouldn't do for her granddaughter, Cheryl, or that Cheryl could not get her to try. She had a wonderful laugh.

Her parents predecease Jerry, her husband of 60 years, Tice, son Leslie, and six of her nine siblings: Phil, Bill, Bob, Herb, Shirley, and Jack.

She will be deeply missed by everyone who was blessed to know her: her daughters Elizabeth, Becky and husband Lowell, Mary and husband David, and Vicki; her Grandchildren Cindy and husband Rich, Scott and wife Chrisy, Cheryl and husband Corey, Jonathan, David and wife Lindsay, and Stephanie and husband Donnie; and her great-grandchildren Jon, Kris, William, Jon, Gina, Addison, Cheyenne, Emily, Gordon, and Tony. Others she is leaving behind for now include her niece, Kimberly, and her husband Vasillio (Basil), nephew Peter, and wife Sandy, and numerous nieces and nephews and their families will miss her kind, gentle smile.

A graveside service will be held later in the Spring.
